Which is the toughest cycling competition: the Tour the France, the Giro d'Italia or the Vuelta a España?

The Tour de France, the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España are the most important three-week cycling races in Europe. They have a long history and attract the best teams and riders in the world. Legendary cyclists like Hinault, Merckx and Indurain made history on some of the most iconic stages such as those finishing at Alpe-d'Huez, Tourmalet, Passo di lo Stelvio, Mortirolo, Angliru or Lagos de Covadonga. However they are different views regarding the difficulty of these races.

But that is not the question. People may want to win NY Marathon, however we know that there are races like the Ultra Marathons that are toughest than the NY Marathon.

The toughest race is most likely to be the one which has the most serious anti-doping control system. Such control probably doesn't exist or is at best inefficient at short-term (drugs being discovered years later in samples). Access to doping is an important point because it changes everything, not only because it affects the daily performance but also the crucial speed of recovery. However, if there is a difference in the way bikers are controlled between these 3 races (and bikers know it), it is not hard to see that comparing toughness between races makes no sense (even if the length and % climbing are different).

The parcours and strength of the field changes every year for each race, so it will ultimately depend. Still voted the Tour, not necessarily because it's physically more demanding, but because of the extra pressure due to it being such a large media event. A Tour yellow jersey most needs to deal with much more media scrutiny, give more interviews etc. compared to the red or pink jersey wearer in the Vuelta or the Giro.

During the last 1.5km you get a 16 per cent in gradient then 19 per cent, 21 per cent and finally an epic maximum gradient of 23.5 per cent...

In a cycling competition, it doesn't matter if you take for or five hours to cover the distance. What really matters is that you cover the distance faster than your competitors. So the toughest race is the one where you compete against the best riders. And which race has the best riders? The Tour de France, no doubt about it. Actually, some of the top riders only participate in Vuelta or Giro when they can't be in Tour de France, like Contador when he was banned, or this year. Another example? Contador and Froome are participating in Vuelta because they fell in early stages in Tour de France and were forced to quit.

The four it´s not only the toughest is also the best not just for the impressive peaks, roads, etc... but because the best cyclists want to win it, in la Vuelta or Giro is difficult to find such quality cyclist racing, you might find one of the best but not all of the top as it happen in the Tour.
