The United Nation observes today the International Day for Tolerance. The day of Tolerance is celebrated every year after UNESCO's Member States adopted on 16 November 1995 the Declaration of Principles on Tolerance. Among other things, the Declaration affirms that tolerance is neither indulgence nor indifference. It is respect and appreciation of the rich variety of our world's cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human. Tolerance recognizes the universal human rights and fundamental freedoms of others. People are naturally diverse; only tolerance can ensure the survival of mixed communities in every region of the globe.
Tolerance and respect of others are the principles we live by at netivist. In our platform, all points of view are welcome and respected, as long as the users who express their opinions are respectful of others. Enjoy the International Day of Tolerance and join our debates!

Despite the UN's clarifications, I find the concept of tolerance problematic. It assumes the moral superiority of the one who tolerates and implies that the others' characteristics/behaviours are somehow problematic and need to be tolerated. The word respect is more accurate, in my opinion, as it assumes a mutual and equal relation.
