Larsson, Mankell and Nesbø are three of the most successful Scandinavian crime writers. Who do you like the most?

In the last few years, new winds in crime writing have been blowing from the northern lands of Europe. Many fans have been avidly reading authors such as Stieg Larsson, Henning Mankell or Jo Nesbø. Each of them has a particular style and fascinating stories. But which Scandinavian crime writer can we consider as the best? Let’s discover a little more about them.

  • Stieg Larsson (1954-2004) was a Swedish journalist and writer who became famous for his Millennium trilogy which sold over 80 million copies worldwide and has been adapted into several films. He is probably the most famous author among the three, but tragically he did not have chance to enjoy the great success of his books, he passed away before his best-selling trilogy was published. Probably key to the success of Larsson's books was his capacity to convey in his fiction his own experience as an independent researcher of right-wing extremism, who had to live with continuous death threats from his political enemies.
  • Henning Mankell (1948-2015) was a Swedish crime writer, children's author and dramatist best known for his Inspector Kurt Wallander series of mystery novels. Selling more than 30 million copies, the series has also been adapted to films and TV series. Mankell lived in Africa for part of his life and supported young African talents through his own publishing company. He came from a family of artists (his grandfather, also called Henning Mankell, was a famous composer), and was married to Eva Bergman, daughter of Ingmar Bergman, the famous director.
  • Jo Nesbø (1960- ) is a Norwegian author and musician primarily known for his crime novels featuring Inspector Harry Hole. He has sold more than 23 million copies of his books. Nesbø  is not only a crime writer; he has also published children books an is the main vocalist and songwriter for the Norwegian rock band Di Derre.

The three authors have received several awards for their books and have been translated to many different languages. Crime readers often enjoy the three authors, but which of the three do you prefer?
