It depends on the format you play! A new player is going to have a hard time collecting the right cards to build a good modern deck. In Which is current cards and cards that go back 10 years.standard format is the only thaT requires cards from the past 2 years (soon to be 18 months). This is better for newer players as new cards are easier to obtain. As their collection grows however, players can trade into older cards to play in other formats, or pay for them when they feel ready. The DCI doesn't restrict older cards from play. If you want to play a deck with older cards, play modern or legacy.

So, when I first saw this I thought it meant using the same card from an older edition and requiring players to have the new printings. But in seeing this, whoever posted this doesn't know much about magic. If we were to abolish the ban-list and have all cards ever printed legal. It would be detrimental to the game for several reasons. 1. The only format would be vintage. Competitive vintage decks cost thousands of dollars. Noone would start playing because noone wants to spend that much on a hobby they are starting out on. 2. Game Play would suffer. There would be about a billion ways to get a turn 1 kill with no ban list and with all cards ever printed legal. 8-9 turn standard games would be pretty rare. 3. If this did happen wizards would have to make more powerful cards so they'd get played in tournaments so people would buy new cards from them instead of old cards from resellers. The result? Power creep and devaluing of older cards. This would also reduce Wizard's R&D design space and make it harder for them to try new things.
I love standard, but I love modern, but I also love Legacy. I've been playing magic for a long time and each format is great. If you don't want a rotating format, start out in modern. But don't start petitions like this with crazy ideas like getting rid of formats. Standard provides a fairly accessible way for people to start out playing magic.

If anyone has bought a power 9 card without knowing that it cant't be played in other competitive formats except vintage, at least can play it casual and there were a legion of players willing to play against him, I would be one of them. Of course it also can be sold later surely with a better price. I don't think that nowadays someone buy a black lotus without knowing it.

If a magic player want to play in a format that permits almost all of the cards that have been printed, he/she have to make a vintage deck, but has to spend several thousands of dollars/euros/pounds to achieve that in order to have a deck that can win games. The existence of several formats of play in fact benefits the game itself, because you can see different mechanics that wouldn't be seen if the only format allowed were vintage. In fact that format is curious, those decks are extremely fast and the games last only a few turns if not only one. People would get bored from Magic fast if the games would last only one of two turns. If all games only last one turn, Magic would dissapear.

The most popular format nowadays is "modern", it permits cards that have been published in the last 11 years only and have a list of banned cards that ensures that games can have enough turns and players have the opportunity to play some cards at least. Right now there are two new cards that everyone knows and agreeds that in the next revision of the ban list will be banned, because those presence in the format is conditioning the whole metagame, there are powerful decks that cannot be played because their strategy has nothing to do versus decks with these cards inside. Restricting cards in magic in fact makes the game more playable and funny.

The thing is more complex than simply ban cards from a format. If there were only one format to play, it would be like today's vintage format, that only has a list of restricted cards, you can have 4 cards with the same name in your deck normally and only 1 of a card of that list. Those cards have proven an enormous power for the game itself and if wizards would permit 4 of them in the decks, the vintage format would be broken, every copy of a card in that list would cost thousands of dollars and people would abandon magic because only a few people would buy one of these cards and have real possibilities to win championships. For example, the most iconic card of the game, black lotus, on internet can be buyed for at least 1500 euros now, and you don't need more than one because you can't put more than one in your deck. I don't imagine what price would have if there were only vintage format without the restriction of one card. On the other side Wizards of the coast several years ago published another list of cards that won't be printed again, not at least in physical format. They did this in order to ensure that those cards would not lose value over time, Magic the Gathering apart from being a game has also a big value for collectionists.

I understand that banning some cards is a way to limit the chances of some decks that show to be superior to others. However I think they could avoid that same effect by simply including a simple rule that brings some more randomness to the game. Like that you can use whatever cards you want in the game but that at the beginning of each play both players may discard (without looking at them 10 cards from their decks). That could make no deck unbeatable and could allow you keep on playing with all cards.

In Magic the Gathering there are various formats and sanctioned tournaments. The truth is that there are a very few cards that cannot see game in none of the formats there are, mostly the ones that changes the "ante" during a game, because the ante was removed from the game long ago.

I was a Magic player in the past, and already at the time the DCI started imposing restrictions. Of course there is the business reason for that. There is also another question... with so many different cards, the possible combinations of them were huge and gave rise to unexpected decks. In the past, DCI had to modify their rules according to that several times. An example is the card Land Tax, which was a card that gave rise to many combos.

By restricting to the new entries, DCI already knows all possible estrategies, and all competitive decks come up very soon via internet. There is no more fun in configuring a deck.

Also I am not a Magic player I am familiar with the game and my opinion is that it's a business, a very profitable niche business. As long as the players still accept to pay for new cards, why should the company change its strategy? It's true it may be unfair and expensive, so the players with more financial ressources may have more opportunities to win, but life is usually unfair anyway...
