Salsa, merengue are bachata are very popular Latin dances. They are stylish and sensual and growing in popularity. Which is the best one and why?
Latin dances have grown in popularity worldwide. Sensual body movements and sexy flair are trademark of these dances. Moreover Latin dances are fun, a good way to interact with other people and to burn calories. Salsa, Merengue and Bachata are among the most popular.
Best Latin dance: salsa, merengue or bachata?
- Salsa dance, originated in Cuba and popularized in New York in the mid 1970s is probably the best known latin dance. There are several different styles such as Casino salsa, Cali salsa, NY salsa, Miami Salsa and LA salsa. The pace of this dance is usually fast and over the years salsa has became more and more technical, with the inclusion of figures and even acrobatics moves and lifts.
- Bachata, originated in Dominican Republic in the early 1960s influenced by several other Latin American popular dances. Bachata was initially a close and slow dance but that also evolve quickly. Now it can be danced in close, semiclose or open position and at a faster pace, following the evolution of bachata music.
- Merengue is also a dance that emerged in Dominican Republic and was popularized in the US by the Dominican migrants. Its rythm is fast and dancing partners hold each others in a closed position, bending their knees slightly left and right, thus making the hips move left and right. This dance is a good physical exercise as well.
In addition to these three there are many other social Latin dances such as cumbia, mambo, tumba, bomba, plena, tango, zamba, morenada, danzón, and perreo.
