The legalization of cannabis is a highly controversial political debate. Do you think is should be legalized and if so for what purposes?
Legalization of marijuana debate
Cannabis has long been used for fibre (hemp) and for seed and seed oils. However cannabis is also used as a drug for medical and recreational purposes. Cannabis can have various physiological and psychological effects on the human body, which include euphoria, relaxation, increase in appetite, decrease in short-term memory, impaired motor skills and feeling of anxiety. Most of these are short term effects but some scientists argue that cannabis can produce some long term effects too.
Smoking cannabis is more popular than governments would like to admit. Due to its drug related use, possession of cannabis is illegal in most countries. Production and distribution is usually considered a crime. However, in recent years many countries have decriminalized the possession of small quantities of cannabis, particularly in Europe, North America and South America. For instance, in the Netherlands the recreational consumption of cannabis in coffee shops was decriminalized. In Colorado the sale and consumption of cannabis has been regulated for both recreational and medical use. Recently, Uruguay became the first country in the world were the production and sale of cannabis is legal.

It is really sad that governments are have been so inconsiderate with people in need of legal narcotic. Not only cannabis. Sometimes they are also reluctant to give other to people with terminal diseases. I know a case with someone suffering a cancer and not receiving enough morphine. I wonder if cost is also an issue. Definitely there should not even a debate about legal use of marijuana. The recreational use is a different matter which I understand governments may be more reluctant to undertake. Thanks for your very moving comment Kerry!
Like other people, I feel inclined to jump on the discussion bandwagon about legalising cannabis. I believe there are a couple of reasons why it SHOULD be legalised! Firstly, surely it would stop the criminal element? And wouldn't it be less attractive for kids? Kids are all about taking risks; if the risk factor isn't there, the desire to try is at least half gone!
But my main reason for wanting cannabis legalised is purely selfish. I have suffered from osteoarthritis for many years. My doctor tell me I have 'shitty bones'. I've now been diagnosed with osteoporous. I have chronic pain; have been prescribed narcotics (high doses - one of the side effects being memory loss), Lyric for nerve damage, paracetamol, Glucosamine, Krill Oil, & high doses of Vitamin D. Really, all to no avail!! I am 53yrs old, haven't been able to work for many years and rarely go out because of my pain levels. Walking any distance is a giant no-no. This is only the beginning of the amount of other prescribed drugs I have to take for my various ailments every day. I am not the only person who has chronic pain. There are others who are definitely worse off than I am. People with end-stage cancer are in unbearable pain. The lists goes on and on...
Cannabis can alleviate chronic and acute pain. Isn't it better to take one drug than a whole basketful?? The medicinal uses for cannabis are widely known, yet our government won't legalise its' use for pain relief. The pros and cons of cannabis use are also widely known, yet if I had the chance I would use it and throw the "legal" drugs over my left shoulder!!!
