The New York Yankees and the New York Mets are two long time rivals in the MLB. Which of these two baseball teams do you prefer?
We are discussing major rivalries in sports between teams of the same city (e.g. Arsenal vs Totenham, Lakers vs Clippers, and Collingwood vs Carlton). It's time to look at New York and the Major League Baseball (MLB)!
Two baseball teams in New York
The New York Yankees (established in 1903) are the most successful American professional baseball franchise, having won 27 World Series championships. They are based in the Bronx.
The New York Mets (established in 1962) are a much more recent franchise, created to replace two departed New York teams (Giants and Dodgers). The Mets are based in Queens and have won two World Series championships (the last one in 1986).
Yankees vs Mets: the rivalry
In fact the Yankees vs Mets is not the first great historical rivalry in New York baseball. During the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, the New York Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers were the major rivals in New York City. However these teams moved to California and Yankees and Mets became the stars of New York baseball. Since 1997, the two teams have met 103 times, the Yankees won 60 of these games (56 in regular season, and 4 in the World Series) and the Mets 43 (42 in regular season, and 1 in the World Series). Even if Yankees fans almost outnumber Mets fans by two to one in New York, Mets are believed to be more invested in their team and to follow more baseball.
