Instant text messaging is now part of our daily lives, but it raises some privacy concerns. Which App do you trust more: WhatsApp or Telegram?
Telegram vs Whatsapp
WhatsApp is the clear leader in the market of instant text messaging applications. However, the American messaging "Goliath" may have found a "David" in its competitor Telegram. Whatsapp Inc. is a company based in Mountain View, California, and lauched its famous app in 2009. Whatsapp was acquired by Facebook in February 2014 and in September 2015, it reached 900 million monthly users. Telegram was founded by Nikolai and Pavel Durov, the founders of Russian VK, Russia's largest social network. Although unknown to many smartphone users, Telegram Messenger has more than 62 million active users.
Although we cannot compare these mobile apps in terms of popularity, as WhatsApp would win hands down, it is interesting to contrast some other dimensions of their service and strategy. WhatsApp has a clear commercial purpose: it is an amazing tool that allows us to communicate and share our experiences, but they charge for the service a small fee. Monetization potential is one of the reasons why Facebook paid $16 billion for Whatsapp. Users express privacy concerns and dislike that the personal information stored by Whatsapp could be used for commercial purposes
On the other hand, Telegram is run by a German non-profit organization, which is backed by the young entrepreneur and philanthropist, Pavel Durov. Telegram Messenger client code is open source. Telegram also puts great emphasis on communicating their concern with online security and respect for the privacy of their users. To the extent that they offer secret chats, where the communication between users is encrypted.
What do you think, have you used these apps? Do you have concerns about WhatsApp or Telegram? Is privacy a key issue for you when downloading an application on your smartphone? Which of the two do you prefer to use in our iPhone or Android phone?
