FIFA vs Pro Evolution Soccer. Football (soccer) videogame franchises battle. Which one do you prefer? Vote in our poll and tell us why!

PES vs FIFA

FIFA Football (or FIFA Soccer) and Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) are the most successful football (soccer) franchises in the story of videogames. Since Electronic Arts released the first FIFA Soccer game in 1993 the franchise has sold over 100 million games worldwide. Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer series (also known as World Soccer: Winning Eleven) came out in 1996. Ever since Konami has sold over 80 million copies worldwide. Both franchises launch a new game every year. Despite the frequency of the releases these games tend to be very positively received, not only by the general public and soccer fans, but also by video game critics.

The new installments of the series FIFA 17 and PES 2017 are bringing their rivalry to a new level. Gamers and reviewers see the gap in terms of quality of these two games to keep on narrowing. It is becoming very much a choice in terms of type of gameplay and community, what game are your friends playing. After several years in which FIFA seemed to reign supreme, many argue that PES has taken over their Electronic Art's rival.

Which of the two is your favorite football / soccer videogame franchise? Why?

I completely agree with you. I think Fifa was the best in the 94-99 period. Then International Superstar Soccer (ISS) was released, which was much better than the Fifa series. Pro Evo was born out of ISS and dominated the genre until 2008. I think Pro Evo lost it completely with the move from PS2/Xbox to the then new generation PS3/Xbox 360. They didn't adapt well to the new graphics engine and they rebuilt the game completely from scratch, resulting in a very poor Pro Evo 2008. After playing that game for a while I moved back to Fifa. EA made a much more sensible decision of improving what they already got and have being d
oing that ever since. It is funny to look at my games shelf... A few other games and then... PES 6, PES 2008, Fifa 09, Fifa 10, Fifa 11, Fifa 12, Fifa 13... Fifa 14 is not on the shelf because it's a digital download! But... I think now EA suffered partially from the same problem as Konami did back in 2007. They tried to change the game too much for the current version (Fifa 14), and as result the game is very very buggy. Players freeze while running, Goalkeepers are dumb, one moment they make an impressive inexplicable save, and a second later they let in the easiest of the balls shot from 30 yards and at very low speed. But it looks like they listened to the users, as Fifa 15 which is coming out in a couple of weeks, is going to have those issues addressed. Of course, new issues will make their appearance... but hey, after all is just a piece of software... is meant to have bugs! :)

Some years ago, Pro Evolution Soccer was a much better game than FIFA. At that time they didn't have license contracts so it was funny to play with Zedinine Zadine as France number 10. But EA Sports learned and made a lot of progress, and these days I would say that their product is better. But since there is a new game every year, we will have to wait and see. For the moment I vote for FIFA.
