Who will win the Champions League 2015-2016?
The UEFA Champions League is the most prestigious club tournament in the world. Every year the best football (soccer) teams from each European league compete to win this iconic trophy. The Champions League replaced the European Cup or European Champion Club's Cup in 1992, which had run since 1955. The Champions League introduced a group stage where teams played twice against each other before going into the knock-out stage. There are 8 groups and 4 teams in each of them. This was a major change vis-a-vis the previous European Cup, which had only a play-off system. Another major evolution is that now the most powerful leagues in Europe, such as the Spanish Liga, English Premier League, the Italian Serie A, and the German Bundesliga can send several representatives to the Champions League.
The Champions League is one of the most important sporting events of the year and it generates very large revenues in TV rights and sponsorhip. The overall estimated revenues are approximately 1.5 billion euros. The prizes for the winning clubs are very high, but most importantly those who win the Champions League become part of the history of football. Only a few clubs have earned that honor.
Best European football clubs
We have shorlisted the group of clubs according to their history and performance so far in the competition. One of them will probably win the Champions League:
- FC Barcelona: current reigning champion. FC Barcelona has won this trophy 5 times. Distinguished players: Messi, Neymar, Iniesta, Rakitic and Suarez.
- Real Madrid: most successful club in the history of the competition and winner of the 2014 edition. Real Madrid has won 10 titles and reached the semi-finals last year. Distinguished players: Ronaldo, Bale, Benzema, Modric, and Ramos.
- FC Bayern Munich: German champion. Bayern Munich has 5 titles and reached last year's semi-finals. Distinguished players: Robben, Muller, Neuer, Ribery, and Lewandowski.
- Juventus FC: Italian champion. Juventus has won twice the Champions League and reached the final last year. Distinguished players: Pogba, Buffon, Morata, Marchisio, and Khedira.
- Paris Saint-Germain: French champion. PSG has never won the title yet. Distingusined players: Ibrahimovic, David Luiz, Di Maria, Silva, and Cavani.
- SL Benfica: Portuguese champion. Benfica has won the title twice. Distinguished players: Luisao, Gaitan, Julio Cesar, Jonas, and Mitroglou.
- Manchester United: only finished 4th last year in the premier league, but they are always among the favorites for the title which they have won 3 times. Distinguished players: Rooney, Mata, De Gea, Schweinsteiger, Carrick.
- Chelsea FC: English champion. It has won once the Champions League. Distinguished players: Hazard, Fabregas, Costa, Pedro, and Terry.
- FC Porto: second last Portuguese League, but the Dragoes (Dragons) are always very competitive and have won the Champions League twice. Distinguised players: Casillas, Maicon, Brahimi, Pereira and Osvaldo.
- Other teams: Atletico de Madrid, Manchester City, Arsenal, PSV Eindhoven, etc.
